During winter, the skin loses its moisture due to cold and dry weather. If winter drives you crazy because it brings your skin uncomfortable dryness and itchiness, I think it is time to upgrade your skin care regime to combat or lessen your battle against dry skin problem.

Banish that dry and itchy feeling of your skin during winter with these simple rules to follow:


Moisturize More During Winter Season – Your moisturizer might work fine for you during spring and summer but as weather changes, so, too, should your skin care routine. During winter it is best to choose an ointment moisturizer that is oil-based. Why oil-based? Oil based moisturizer creates a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion.


Put On Your Sunscreen – Yes, It is advisable to never skip your sunscreen all year round. Sunscreen is not just for the summer season. Winter sun combined with snow glare can also damage your skin. Just like in summer, you can also get sunburned even in the cold weather of winter season. The snow and ice reflect UV radiation so sunburn is really possible. To increase the sun protection, it is advisable to put on a sunscreen 30 minutes before going out, use a higher SPF, and reapply sunscreens whenever possible particularly when sweating or swimming.


Use a Hand Cream – The skin on your hands are much thinner and fewer oil glands than on the most parts of your body. This means that your hands are more prone to cracking and itching because it is harder to keep hands moist during cold dry weather. Eliminate dryness and keep your hands soft and healthy by frequently applying hand cream.


Avoid Long Hot Baths – Yes it is tempting to stay long on a hot shower on a winter day but it doesn’t do your skin any favor. Long hot shower bath is a no-no during winter because sitting in a hot bath can actually break down the lipid barriers of the skin and strips away its natural oils which may result in dryness of the skin. Keep showers under 10 minutes and don’t forget to apply skin moisturizer within three minutes of stepping out.


Grease Up Your Feet – Just like your hands, it is also important to give extra care for your feet during the winter season. It is essential to take certain precautions to ensure that your feet stay warm and dry. Always keep your feet clean and dry during this kind of weather, damp feet gets cold easily and prone to bacterial infections. To avoid this, try putting a good amount of foot powder on your socks. After cleaning your feet, don’t forget to apply some lotion or foot moisturizer. Choose a lotion that contains petroleum or glycerin and uses exfoliants to get rid of dead skin.


Consider Using a Humidifier – Place several small humidifiers throughout your home. Humidifier gets more moisture in the air, the added vapor hyper-hydrate your skin which helps prevent drying out.


Aside from these simple rules, the most important thing you could do is to hydrate your health. You can do this by drinking plenty of water, because as we all know, drinking water will not only keep your skin looking young it also has good effects on your overall health.
